Question:

Whats wrong with my transformer?

Just installed a 600 watt Ryco Engineering landscape lighting transformer a week ago. Worked fine until today. The digital display on the unit turns on and functions as normal, however I am measuring 0 voltage on every setting. The breakers are not tripped and the wiring looks fine. Unit looks fine and does not smell burnt. Is there anything I could be missing on trouble shooting this? I would hate to have to replace it after only a week.

  1. It sounds like a bad connection.  Take your tickler and check the input voltage.  Is there a thermal switch?  Lots of times a non-professional will not make a solid connection.  It could also be cross wired, they will work for a while sometimes that way. Black or red to hot, white to neutral.

  2. I am not familiar with this transformer but like any transformer it has two set of windings.

    The input or line side.

and the output or secondary side.

Set you meter to ohms scale to check continuity between the line voltage connections, you should have continuity.

Do the same on the secondary connections, it should also have continuity.

If either winding has failed the transformer is shot.

  3. Given that the thing is one week old the best thing to do would be to check out your warranty.  My guess is that you are due a free replacement.
