Whats wrong with Troxel Spririt Helmets? I was looking at a barns page and it said that they wouldn't exept people that had Troxel Spirit helmets into their lesson program. The page said they had 2 approve the helmet u wore and that Troxel Spirits wouldn't be approved. Whats Wrong with Troxel Spirits? I own 1 and I was just wondering if their was something wrong that I should be worried about.

  1. Personally I'm not keen on them (I am old-fashioned -lol) but I have never heard anything bad about them - the only thing I can think of is if it is one of those places that has a dress code and they just don't like the look of them.

  2. It probably isn't up to the ASTM/SEI regulations, but I wouldn't be worried about it. Just if you want to show you will have to get another helmet that meets the regulations is all :-]

  3. They're really hard to get tight enough, and they tend to get looser by themselves. Very rarely do I see a Troxel thats fitting properly.

For a low priced helmet, I like the IRH dial-fit helmets. Way better than the Troxel.

  4. My friend's old barn said the same thing, in fact, her trainer didn't let her ride in a Troxel at all. I guess the way they sit on your head doesn't protect you in a fall as well as it should. Since the Spirit is their lowest model, I'm guessing it is by far the worst.

My other friend got bucked off of a 12 hand pony when we were little and she was wearing a Troxel Spirit and the thing all but cracked in half.

I have a Troxel Dakota Duratec and a Charles Owen Hampton and I have taken head falls in both of them and the fall in the Hampton hurt alot alot alot less. (they were off the same horse)

  5. Troxel's website leads a person to believe they only produce helmets that meet safety standards, so I'll venture a guess that it's because it's a lower cost helmet.

The best way to find out for sure is to ask the barn manager or an instructor.  Perhaps somebody had a bad experience with them, or maybe they want to promote a higher image.

  6. I would have to agree with the other poster that it probably has something to do with dress code.  Troxel Schooling helmets are ASTM/SEI approved (which you should use regardless of whether or not you are showing).

I know of several farms in our area that compete at "A" shows regularly and require all students (while in lessons) to dress to a strict code... usually requires tall boots and breeches, polo shirt, belt, black show helmet (some won't allow the new fashinable striped helmets) and gloves.  If that is the case then ANY schooling helmet would not be permitted.  The theory is that when people dress 'professionally' they act 'professionally' - so if you dress like an "A" show rider you will be more likely to ride like an "A" show rider... it's a psychological thing that many instructors truly believe in - and I, personally, would have to agree.

If you are truly worried then you should talk to your own instructor and ask whether your helmet is appropriate.  If you don't have an instructor then you can always call the barn you are looking at and ask them why they have that rule.

    Hope This Helps!

  7. To be honest I looked at buying a new helmet a while ago, and that Troxel helmet was one that WAS NOT on my list. It is the cheapest helmet and as far as I am concerned, if I am relying on a helmet to save my life I would be buying something a little better!!!

  8. I've never heard anything negative about them, the barn I worked at for a time used them for kids' lesson helmets.  They're th most popular schooling helmet on the market, and  couldn't find anything negative abotu them in a web search at all.  I'd e-mail the barn and ask why they don't allow them in their lessons.
