Whats wrong with this kitten?

OK Before anyone goes off and starts saying I need to take the kitten to the vet I know, Im taking it tomorrow Ive already called the office.

Im just wondering about something.

I found a litter of kittens, about 6 weeks-7 weeks old is my guess. All of them are healthy except one. Shes so much smaller than the others, kind of cross eyed, shakes her head in circles when she walks, and something seems wrong with the development of the bones in her hind legs....almost like she was born without joints. Other than that shes fine, eats fine, walks funny but still is quite active.

Because her eyes are crossed and her head shakes I thought she may be blind but she plays with string when she sees it so I know she isn't.

does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be wrong with her?

  2. Hi Sassy,

From what you are describing here, it sounds like your kitten may have a neurological disorder. There are several causes for these conditions, one of which could be a head trauma.Talk to your vet about

    Feline Vestibular Disorder

    Cerebellar hypoplasia

While these conditions are not curable, sometimes they can just disappear, or the kitty can learn to compensate for these disabilities. They are not life threatening disorders.

Since your kitten is eating, drinking, using the box ok and is in good spirits, waiting the additional day to take her to the vet is perfectly ok.

You may want to consider keeping this little one, since she may need a little extra tender loving care, and patience. Some folks may not be eager to take on the responsibility. I think she "found YOU" through no accident.

Good luck with your kitten, and please do let me know what the vet says. I am really interested.

  3. wow hun im sorry..

    im thinking birth defects.

sometimes runts of the litter get it:(

maybe you should consider putting it down, if its in pain.

  4. aw dont give up on the runt, they usually turn out to be good cats. dont know, seems like a birth defect.

  5. I've had many kittens and there have been a few who I thought had problems with their legs too but it came to be that they just didnt know how to walk well. The one I had was a runt and everytime he would turn its head he would basically fall over. His walk should get better over time, but make sure the little guy is getting kitten replacement milk to help him get bigger.

  6. ....... hmmm.... you can always go to a vet :)

  7. im not sure but thats really sad mabe u do need to take it to the vet take care of untill u go to the vet

  8. i would guess birth defects. be prepared to put her to sleep, it might be best. ask vet if it is warranted.

vet will know, it could be something easily treated.
