  1. Not necessarily the best of all time, or the one to win an imaginary race against all racetrack legends, I'm torn between Ruffian--the gorgeous filly who won every race she ran until she was taken from us before her time--and Alysheba--whose gutsy performance in the Kentucky Derby was the best I've ever seen.   Across the pond, I think a colt named Shergar deserves mention, as does Australia's Phar Lap.  In the good looks, department, my vote has to go to Victory Gallop (I got a chill up my spine in one during a post parade).   Favorite fictitious horse? Casey's Shadow.  Favorite quarter horse? Dash for Cash.  Favorite paint horse?  Behind Blue Eyes (you've never heard of him, but I owned him).  Best I've ever owned? Maleklula (tried every time).  Best name? Longblackskidmark (yeah, I was part owner--first one i ever had a part of that never won a race).  Favorite horse not mentioned here? Citation.  Favorite horse with an emotional story? Afleet Alex.  Horse I won most money betting on? Captain Bodgit (or was it Lemons Forever? maybe Touch Gold?)

  2. barbaro was amazing

  3. [[In order]]

    -Barbaro

    -Man o' War

-Ruffian/Curlin [[both I loved, so Curlin is pretty high up on my list]]

    -Secretariat

    -Rags To Riches

    -Nashua

    -Sir Barton

    -War Pass ;]

  4. Ruffian.

she was a big black beautiful filly and she never lost a race.  She was ahead at every point of call in every race from a sprint to a mile and a half.  She won all of her races by wide margins.  Running was effortless for her... she could have run all day.  If you watch her run the Coaching Club American Oaks (and many other races), you'll see she runs through the stretch on her left lead... most horses need to switch to their right lead because they're tired... even over a mile and a half, Ruffian would run the whole thing on her left lead because she never got tired.  She tied or broke track records in almost every race she ran.

Here are a couple videos of her:

She broke down in the great match race against Foolish Pleasure.  When she was waking up from the anesthetic, she broke her other leg too.  Her sire had broken his leg 3 times in his career and both her sire and dam died when they thrashed when coming out of the anesthetic... Reviewer was having his cast changed from breaking his leg in a paddock accident; Shenanigans was having colic surgery and broke both legs when waking up.

  5. ,,,,,,,,,Secretariat

  6. Willy, nickname J.D., he was my pony horse on the track, and in 12 years, I matched raced him 7 or 9 times, eighth of a mile, and he was never beaten, he was also my riding horse when I quit the track and just an all round pleasure to be around. Never had to tie him for any reason, just simply drop his reins or his cotton lead and he would either stand or graze if there was anything around to graze on.

Besides him the list is just too long, and many of the horses you would of never heard of. For I give Admiration and Respect not just to the Classic runners, but also to some great claimers I had the good fortune to see and get to know some of them personally.

But if I had to pick a few Classic Horses , here it goes:

Eclipse, Man O' War, Citation, Regret, Damascus, Ruffian, Secretariat, Hatchet Man, Stymie, Kelso, John Henry, Assault Bold Ruler, Carry back, Seabiscuit,  Native Dancer........Someone stop me.

If I have to PICK one horse, wow......ahhhhh.......Man O' War! Beating Eclipse by a nose and Secretariat by another nose and bold Ruler by anther nose and the rest of the pack breathing down their necks. And that's the best I can do for ya.

With that stated I must tell you that horse people are very regionally minded, I grew up in the East Coast circuit where and for only a few times a year we would hear that there was actually other tracks scattered around the U.S. and the world, but never considered them to be on par with us. It was a very politically incorrect and closed world, and they would have to come to us even be considered or to prove their worth. Amazing but true. In my 30 years on the track, I bought a Mid-West or a West Coast racing form a rarely, it was almost as they didn't exist and the rest of the world, I was rarely affected by in my daily racing life, The Epsom Derby was something to soak in. JUST KIDDIN all you English Racing people, I know the history of horse racing and the thoroughbred quite well.

I think the world of Horse Racing has changed a bit since, It has been 25 years since I have bought a Racing form or been at a track, but I still think that horse people have regional prejudices and consider the great horses of their region to be Superior as you see most of my horses were bred in and raced in the Eastern U.S., for the most part of course.

I am curious to see if other peoples favorites are also regionally picked.

  7. Secretariat

  8. I have three all time favorites!  In order of preference they are:

Secretariat (By far the greatest race horse of all time)

Precisionist (Had a great career then broke his cannon bone but came back briefly and did well)

    and

Prized (The first horse to beat Sunday Silence and it was not even close)

  9. holy bull,always,forever

  10. sunday silence  i think the preakness stakes race between him and easy goer is one of the best races ever

  11. Nashwan - he won the 1989 British Derby. It was the first bet I ever placed and I backed him and also the 500/1 outsider, Terimon, for a place. I collected 65 for a 2 bet and was hooked :-)

  12. DUBAI MILLENNIUM - to watch his win in the Dubai World Cup brings tears to my eyes.  I was just starting to get interested interested in racing when he was racing as a 3 year old and he really captured my imagination.

I was lucky enough to be working for Darley when he was retired to stud, so I saw him most days.  We were all devastated when he died from grass sickness, but his legacy lives on through his sons and daughters.

  13. Sea Biscuit

    Secretariat

Man of War, most people do not know why he could run forever, it was because he had 2 hearts, for real, he did, and was strong as a bull.

Barbaro was also my favorite for his time...and I think he would have broken all records and was unbeatable, its a shame to lose a horse like Barbaro.........he was so magnificent........

  14. easy goer and sunday silence head to head every time, cigar whom i had the pleasure of galloping at the training center at saratoga, smarty jones mostly cause a old friend from rockingham park rode him stew eliott plus all the ones ractracjac mensioned all awesome horse's

  15. Ruffian. Even when she shattered her leg to bits, she kept fighting to win the race. And unfortunately her determined heart had cost her, her life.

  16. La Montagna winning the ammi stradbroke... but i'm bias as i was her strapper and we worked d**n hard to get to it... and she just raced a dream... and is such a wonderful horse.. here is a vid of the race...

  17. Funny Cide. I fell in love with him when I was little, he's the horse that started my racing obsession haha. Seeing that NY bred little gelding stop all over the high priced, "elite" blue bloods was inspiring.
