The Spanish National Anthem is beautiful [1761] - it is not a vocal piece so it was good to see Rafael Nadal enjoying listening to it without having to sing lyrics when he received his Olympic Gold Medal.  

Lyrics have been written for it at different times.  The origins of the anthem, one of the oldest in Europe, are unknown. The melody was first printed in a document dated 1761 and entitled El Libro de Ordenanza de los toques militares de la Infantería Española (The Spanish Infantry's Book of Military Bugle Calls), by Manuel de Espinosa. Here it is entitled La Marcha Granadera ("March of the Grenadiers"), though no composer's name is given.

The Philippines national anthem gets a lot of athletes into trouble.  It is such a jolly tune and practically impossible not to want to dance to it. Dancing to the National Anthem is an arrestable offence in the Philippines!  It would never happen in Britain.

I love the Japanese national anthem because it is so different to all the others, very mysterious and doesn't resolve at the end, just drifts away like the mist.

I agree about Jerusalem for the English - far better than Land of Hope and Glory (even though I am very proud of Elgar who is a local).  Parry's music and Blake's words meld together wonderfully.  And the sentiment sums up the best of England - that people of different cultures and religions can settle in peace and one day make England the centre of civilisation.  Even more poignant now that the city of Jerusalem is a divided place, and the idea of Birmingham being the meeting point of the world's great faiths although accurate does seem somewhat odd.  Can't vote for Jerusalem though because I am English.

I like Italy's and Spain's, but if I gotta pick one I'll go for the Italian.

I'm a Brit and hate God Save The Queen, it's so slow and boring, I recommend that it be replaced by the theme from The Archers radio show before 2012, much more upbeat and cheerful :-)

The US one is good, but the Americans play it at every opportunity, (baseball games, school rallies etc.) If you overplay any piece of music it loses a bit of its value. I really hope us brits change from 'God Save The Queen' (dreary) to 'Jerusalem (Much more upbeat)
