Am interested in all wonderful moments of golf, whether your own greatest shot or someone else's- my own is watching Johnny Miller hit one irons through the mists on a Scottish practice ground - think it was Troon- and hearing them land on the roof of an old barn about 235 yards away......this was a surreal moment of golf ( FOR ME)- what are yours? Amusing moments are also welcome here.... like Spiro Agnew, felling a spectator who wasnt hurt...but silly comments just debase us all and the beautiful game

  1. Hmm that's  a tough one. so many fond memories on the course.

I would have to say beyond the two holes in one I have been lucky enough to hit by crossing persistance , tons of practice and sheer volume of playing would have to take a backseat. Heck anyone can hit a hole in one if they can hit straight and play tirelessly until the odds lean your way. No, I think it was the real purpose of the game. The thing we all seek to find playing golf I was lucky enough to find.

No matter how well you play you can go to the clubhouse, evaluate your scorecard, and see where you could have done better. Thats what keeps us coming back but there is no solice in playing a game you can't win.

We measure our game against ourselves by what we were thinking  and how we did evaluating and protecting our next shot when in fact what we seek is a certain level of confidence and comfort that we can rely on to do well. In many sports its called, "being in the zone", an effortless state in which no matter what you do it goes well and sometimes near perfect. I had shot a 66 the day before and I was in the zone. the previous  day's 66 was a hard fought battle but this day's outing was something entirely different, effortless...

I stopped on the tee at twelve and there was a small breeze. Feeling the wind in my face and looking out at the course has always had a special  feel to me but this was different, this was priceless. I was 3 under and without strategy. No planning and no second thought. I was just hitting the ball. That day was special. I continued without worry and I knew  I would get at least three more birdies and possibly an eagle if I got there in two on 16. This wasn't a hope, it was fact. I love the game of golf but it wasn't the game that pleased me so much this moment, it was what the opportunity the game allowed. That  4 hours of pure effortless perfection that lacked all stresses and worries. I was allowed something that few ever see in their lifetime and I feel so lucky. Looking out from that tee box on twelve is a moment that will be remembered and cherished far beyond most of life's wonders and beauties for its simplicity and cadence.

  2. My moment was my second shot on a par 3.  I had hooked my drive into some long grass below the green.  I could barely see the top of the flag.  I was able to punch it out of the grass and ended up within six inches of the hole.

  3. My oldest son invited me to participate in his Member- Guest tournament at the Westchester Country Club just after the pros had held their event. This was his first as a member. We won a closest to the pin on their # 10 hole both days and finished second in our flight. Just a great experience to see this young man developing into a responsible member.

  4. my first and only hole in one. I was 13 years old

  5. Freakiest was I let the group behind play through while looking for a ball, then the group behind them thought I was sneaking onto the course, so would tee off past me .... they kept pinging balls my way ... didn't help my score card at all

  6. For me it was probaby the first time I was able to break par for 9 holes.  I was in 7th grade, and we had some kind of retreat going on for a youth group where we basically stayed up all night going around town to different functions and events.  Me and a buddy got bored with it, and as soon as the sun started to rise, we ditched out and went to the golf course.  Made book-end birdies on the first and ninth, with seven pars in between.  Came in with a 34 on a par 36 front nine.  Im 30 now and I'll never forget that morning.  My buddy that I was wtih shot his career low to this day, with a 37.

Great morning, great friends, and a great score.  What more could you ask for?

  7. I've had a few but will share one that I will probably never forget.  I was 13 years old in my second season of golf playing with my Dad on Sunday morning.  The tenth was a short par four and I pushed by drive into the right rough.  I gouged it out of there back to the fairway and then hit a nine iron to the front edge of the green 50 feet from the flag which was back right.  I gauged the downhill left to right putt, struck it firmly and watched in slow motion as it approached it's goal, slowed down, took the break and went right in dead center for the first par of my life.  Dad made bogey and so I got another first at the 11th tee - I had the honor.

  8. My greatest golf moment was 3 years ago.  I was on the first tee and hit a pop fly for a 3 wood shot off the tee that left me 150 yards out when it should have been half that distance.  I pulled out a 7 iron and hit to this day, the best iron shot I've ever hit.  It did not leave the flag and it landed and bounced in the hole.  My first and only eagle to date.  My brother was playing that day and he reacted like he hit the shot.  I guess I was in shock.  I didn't react until he did and still didn't react like he did.  I guess I was still miffed about the tee shot.

  9. Tiger has hit so many amazing, impossible or improbable shots it's hard to remember them all. the putt at the masters on 16 comes to mind, as does playing the british open without a driver, and  i think it was about 3-4 yrs. ago at one of the last big tournaments of the yr. literally, in the dark from amongst the trees putting it on the green close to the hole. one of the most astounding shots i've ever seen. for comic relief how about President Ford plunking more than one spectator at various events.

  10. My "Hole in 5".  During an all day golf outing at a local course with my cousin, we came to hole #12 for the 3rd time.  The hole is a downhill 175 yard par 3.  I shanked my first shot  out of play to the right, followed that with an exact shank to the same location.  My next shot hit the green, two bounces and rolled into the cup for a 5.

  11. I would say my best golf moment was about 4 days ago when I was out golfing with my dad. It was the last hole and under the odd rules we were playing with I couldn't win. But using real rules if I made my last putt from 25 feet away I could tie him. I drilled the 25 foot putt right into the cup and I felt so proud and happy. It was great.

  12. My best golf moment was playing in a LA area high school golf tournament and I beat Tiger Woods in match play.

I went to and graduated from Polaris High in 1992 and think I was a few years older than Tiger Woods. I admit he was incredible, but at the time, no one knew that he was that good. I was hardly nervous because I was a fairly good golfer too. I was also 6'2", 210 lbs and he was maybe the same height but 100 lbs lighter.

It was at Anaheim Hills Golf Course. It's a puny course so both of us were hitting driver, wedges all day. He was a little off with his driver so I was getting a few more birdie chances. Thank God my putter was on because I was matching his birdies and he was matching mine even with Tiger having to hit off the rough half the time (short rough).

The last hole was a short par five about 450 yards and both of us hit monster drives (Keep in mind in 1992, a 280 yard drive a monster drive). He outdrives me about 5 yards so its my turn. I hit a 6 iron to about 10 feet and I'm fist pumping like crazy. My whole team is behind me and remember, he had just won the US Juniors.

Long story short, I make the most clutch and purest eagle putt in my entire life and Tiger birdies. I win: 2 and 1.

How many people can say they beat Tiger Woods?!

Now I own a small real estate investment company and Tiger wins Majors. Sometimes I wonder if I chose the right career path. LOL.

  13. Thats easy, hole in one on the 9th hole, went right under the windmill blade, bounced off the back rail, and right back into the hole.  Really thought I was going to hit the windmill too.  Threw my cap to  the ground like Tiger and everything.  (by the way, I double boggied the loop-d-loop on the next hole, very embarasing.)

If you think that debases us, well sorry.  I don't think humor ever debases a situation.

Now, if you want my greatest golf moment on a course, it has to be the time I hit a great drive, a beautigul approach, and chipped in from the fringe for my one and only eagle in my life, in Charleston Springs North Course, NJ.
