  1. The only fully perminant way to delete files from a computer is by formatting the hard drive eight times as files can still be recovered after a format.

  2. This is not the total solution, but you could start by "Empty Recycle Bin".

  3. Keep in mind.

Files are stored in the hard disk in 1's and 0's. Each file has a header -- which contains information like on which sector of the hard disk the file starts. when you simply delete a file, it just moves the file to another folder (recycle bin). when you shift+delete or use empty recycle bin, it removes the header of the file - not the 1's and 0's - the contents of the file. But this area is considered as free space and can be Overwritten.

The formatting command is NOT actually to delete the files, it actually creates the sectors of harddisks so it can be read and written into by windows or any other OS. (beware using quick format is like deleting -- whole format is more secure when sectors are made)

If you are wanting Very much to make it permanently inaccessable -- delete the disk and fill it in by junk data (like copy big files again and again, untill the drive is full - which means all the 1's and 0's have be over written)

  4. Formatting your hard drive completely erases all the data. The stuff in your recycle bin is completely deleted from your computer, otherwise you wouldn't gain disk space when you empty it.  There are sometimes places where information on files is stored in Temp files or registry but the file is not actually on the hard drive anymore.

  5. Apparently you can never permanently erase the files on your computer unless you found a way to obliterate the hard drive. Last time I went to the Doctors I was reading an article in a PC Magazine which explained how Federal Law Enforcement can search the disk right back to the edges and there they will find what was originally saved on any section of the drive. It is made up of 1's and 0's in the Binary nature of a computer system and everything is if you like pasted over spots of free space.

Of course the machines they run this through are very expensive and rare so unless you are a hardcore terrorist or despicable pedophile you are pretty safe.
