What’s the difference between Road, Street, Drive, Avenue to name ways in English?

Some of them are quite similar and I don’t understand why it is Road and not Street! Or Drive and not Road and so on!

I think it has something to do with the length of the passage.  For example, the very longest would be Boulevards, because there is a Long Beach Blvd. and Compton Blvd. that travel not only through the cities of their namesake, but bordering cities as well.
