  1. Well, this is the information age, so kids need to feel at home on the computer.

For special education, a computer can help kids write who have fine motor difficulties. There are programs for speech therapy on the computer as well. I have a person I work with who has cerbral palsy. She can do research with the computer and used it to do school work and get a regular high school diploma. She's smart, but can't write.

  2. Overrated.

  3. I teach very low functioning 6th graders and have found that they will attempt to write and respond to questions in writing if they are able to use a computer. Many of my students have very poor small motor coordination (fine motor) and it is very difficult for them to write-- so they don't! Another positive to the use of computers is that my students have to "think" in order to research things on the internet. It's alot easier to get them to do this on a computer than by using encyclopedias which they can't read.
