What’s the difference between FICO score and the credit score from the 3 major credit bureaus?

I’m trying to find out where I stand (Transunion 742) compare to the max score possible. But as I research deeper I’m getting mixed responses because some people refers to FICO while others refers to Transunion/Experian/Equifax. So what I would like to know is: What is the max FICO score? What is the max Transunion/Experian/Equifax score? And at which score range (under both systems) is considered excellent credit? Thank you for your help.

  1. Equifax uses BEACON SCORE.  Trans-Union uses CLASSIC SCORE.  Experian uses Fair-Isaac or FICO as it is more commonly known.     The range is usually 350-850.  I am pulling this info directly off of a credit report in front of me.  Where did you get your incorrect info Spiffman?

  2. your FICO score is the Fair Isaac Corportations scoring system for a persons credit risk and history and it the best known and most used system for rating a persons credit. It ranges between 300 and 850.  The reason you have 3 different scores is because different credit card companies and lendors report to different credit bureaus. So maybe you miss a payment on a credit card that reports to Equifax but not to Transunion. Your score will be higher with transunion.

  3. You will find that your score varies between each CRA.  Not all three have the same exact information regarding your accounts.  Some may not show certain accounts and some accounts will show up on all three.  This explains the reason your score varies.

The Max FICO score is 850 (but only about 15% of the population have a score this high).

Excellent is anywhere from 750 to 850 (under the FICO scoring method)

    Hope this has helped you.

  4. All three credit bureaus offer a score.  They will even score the other two!

But, FICO is really the only one that matters.  FICO are the most accurate.

The bureaus scores aren't worth wasting money on.

  5. FICO (Fair Issac Company) max score is 850. These are the folks that developed the credit score algorithm. TU, Experian and Equifax each use a variation of that based upon information reported to each of those companies. A 742 from TU is a very good score. 40% of credit scores fall between 750 and 850, so the closer you are to 800 the more assured you will be of having excellent credit. Only 13% rank at 800 or better.

  6. FICO scores from 300 to 850 with anything that calculates to below 300 defaulting to a 0.

Equifax uses FICO Transunion has their own version and Experian uses the Vantage system that scores from 501 to 990.

Because all lenders do not report to all credit bureaus and because there are so many different scoring systems it gets confusing.

Anything above a 740 FICO is considered elite and for Vantage anything above a 901 is considered A credit.

  7. You should focus more on your FICO score because this is the score most creditor use,
