  1. Less work

    more air

  2. Why use a trampoline instead of jumping on the ground?

same idea, snowboard uses compressed tension to propel you when it is released in the process of ollying.

  3. When you say "jump" I assume that you mean to pop off the board evenly with both feet.  This is an acceptable way to get air.  The ollie (and nollie) uses the spring of your board to get you even higher, when it is done well.  In an ollie, you quickly shift pressure to the tail of the board then push up with the back foot.  This adds the power from the spring of your board to the power of your leg to get you higher.  The timing of the ollie is much more difficult than a simple pop.  So practice your ollie's when the result doesn't matter much and continue to pop when it is critical (tabletop jumps, rails, etc.).  Once your ollie is solid you can take it onto terrain features.

  4. Ultimately an ollie will give you much greater height and also a lot of control.  It's tough to get a lot of air just jumping w/ your feet b/c you also have to carry the weight of the board.

With an ollie the board pretty much springs itself up with plently of boost to spare. I can probably get about three times more air with an Ollie than straight hopping.

  5. An ollie uses the flexibility of the board to help propel you into the air and it's the beginning of most tricks.  Just jumping uses your legs (and not the board) for upward motion and is tired and isn't the proper form to launch into a spin or other trick.
