  1. Uprights cost much less than recumbent, but long periods of riding will hurt your backside. There are many used bikes available through online auctions [eBay, Amazon, etc.] and Craigslist.

Be sure to check out a used unit before paying. Caveat emptor - buyer beware!

A recumbent exercise bike is the pricier way to go but is more comfortable.
You can put a pad on the seat or behind your back, which you cannot do with an upright. You can adjust the seat position forward and back much easier than adjusting an upright.

Be sure that all screws are tight and the device is dead level and steady on the ground. It should not wobble or rock when no one is sitting on it. Leave enough space around all sides and front/back for safe entry and exit.

In both cases, the commercial units are EXTREMELY HEAVY and stable. You might even consider anchoring a home-use device by lagging it into your basement or garage floor for safety!
