  1. mostly its all in the kind of box you have. some boxes are so efficient that they would make a pair of 10's sound like 15's. for example the duals that were being sold by best buy for real cheap, the subs itself are S****y but the box makes it sound like a pair of $800 subs.

  2. A woofer ability to produce sound is dependent on surface area and Xmax. Xmax(linear excursion) is a measurement of how far the speaker can travel in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior. Watts do not help much in figuring out which combo can produce more sound.

    To put it simple it all depends on how large the surface area is and how far the cone can travel. The four tens have a much greater combined surface are than the other options so the 12"s and the 15" would have to have some insane Xmax  to compete with the four 10"s. The four tens are most likely the loudest combo but the correct answer can not be given without more specs. It is totally possible for two high quality 12"s to beat four average 10"s.

    If the woofers are all the same brand\model it is safe to assume the four 10"s have the greatest ability.

  3. depends on the efficiency of the subs, type of enclosure you're using, vehicle it's installed in, etc.  This question is impossible to answer without a lot more information.

  4. all depends on the box......always.

  5. what.?

  6. This answer is quite simple at first but if we look deeper into the inteded use of the system then it becomes a little harder. first of all if we look at it purely from surface area then having four ten inch woofers gives the largest surface area.

    4 x 10=  314 square inches

    2x12 = 226 square inches

    1x15 = 176 square inches

    As you can see the shear quantity of the four inch woofers makes give the largest surface area.

    generally the larger the surface area the more air you can move and the higher the spl within the cabin.

    next we look at the available power which in this case is 900 800 700 respectively. as there is little difference between these outputs it will make little difference to the spl. generally to gain 3 dB you have to double power input.

    in this case we have to look at the power input per woofer. if we assume that all of the woofers are the same model from the same brand then this is when the answers starts to become more tricky.

    the 4 10 inch woofers would be getting 225 rms

    the 2 12 inch woofers 400 rms

    and the 15 700 rms

    if we take the woofers reccomended input power to be 300 for the 10's 375 for the 12's and 450 for the 15, then we can say that the 10's will be underdriven, 12's about right and the 15 overdriven ( all at maximum output on the amplifier)

    in this case it is the 10's which will perform the least as they are being underdriven, which may lead to speaker damage. the 15 being overdriven may lead also lead to speaker damage due to an overheated voilcoil if the speaker is used for an extended period of time. the 12 inch woofer which are matched with the amplifer should perform at their optimum level.

    the long and short of it is that you should not only look at the subwoofers but also at matching up the power input of the subwoofers to the output of your amplifier.  if you match this up then 4 x 10 inch woofers would give the highest spl due to the much greater surface area.

    one last thing. generally 10 inch woofers for punchy tight bass.  12 inch for all round and 15 for low low basslines but can be quite lazy at higher frequencies.

  7. we talked about this few days ago here. depends....

    there are some 21" speakers able to hit so hard to make you feel you are hit by baseball bat, but overall - yes. the smaller speaker, the more hiting sound and the larger cone area, the more SPL you have.

  8. 4 ten will make more dbs but 1 15 might beet harder.

  9. More surface area makes it louder.  bigger subs hits harder
