Van de graff generator is not a kids toy, It is used for accelerating charged particles to a few million volt and for that you require thousands of volts of DC supply, moreover you need electrostatic shielding chamber, a conveyer belt. Therefore by now u must have understood that it is not a simple machine rather a complex system only used at research level study which ultimately costs in crore of rupees.

I am sure u are not required to charge a particle to million of volts for ur small general purpose u can use (suitable)capacitor.
