Wheat free snacks for kids?

I have just taken my son off wheat as he keeps saying he feels sick all the time (not gastro or anything, it has been happening for months) and quite often coincides with eating his breakfast (wheat bix) and last night it happened after he had some sultana toast after school. So I am going to take him off wheat for a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference. So I am making his school lunch. I have wheat free bread so his sandwich is done and he has a banana and an apple but what is a snack I can put in. It does not have to be healthy,he is underweight as it is and a little fat will not hurt him. Has anyone got a child with wheat intollerance that can help?? Thanks

  1. brand: Enjoy Life

it's a totally allergy friendly company that has cookies, granola bars, etc.

I get them from whole foods

  2. Corn flakes and any rice puffs like rice crispies Another good alternative is fruits and veggies. If your son get tired of veggies and fruit, try fruit roll-ups or fruit snacks like Gushers. The draw back is added sugar. Look for fruit snacks without sugar. Sugar free puddings and yogurt are another alternate. My sons like to eat cheese sticks, string cheese. They are great for snacks any time any where,. They are individually wrapped and are a great source for calcium. Look out for the"cheese food" as these have less calcium and more additives and fillers.

  3. my daughter is allergic to wheat her fav. things are peanut butter cookies.

    1 C. peanut Butter

    1 C. Sugar

    1 Egg

blend together place small balls on greased cookie sheet and bake 10 mins at 350' f  they will not get brown but they should be chewy in the center. also don't forget   Rice krispies treats is another

  4. Fruit is great

    Raw Vegetables with dip

    Cooked Vegetables covered with cheese

    String cheese

    Jello Cups

    Pop Corn

Fruity Pebbles and CoCo Pebbles (they are made with rice)

Banana Chips instead of a banana

    Corn tortillas and salsa

    Homemade pudding

    Homemade potatoe chips

Best of luck, finding things without wheat is hard to do at a normal grocery store.    You could try  wheatfreefood.com

    they have some snacks there

  5. Be very careful...fruit roll ups have gluten in them as well, they are on the line when they roll them out and cut them.

The fruit by the foot is safe. How about Lays STAXX, crunch and munch, jello brand pudding snacks (chocolate flavor, the vanilla is iffy) sargento cheese sticks, orville redenbacher popcorn (act II has wheat on the line) I'd be careful of rice krispies as well, they don't have to list wheat because they've broken the peptides in the malt down to 12, but for many people who are sensitive to wheat, it will make them sick. Many things with malt or 'flavorings' will not have wheat listed on the allergen label, due to this loop hole, but they do react to them.

Also look at sunkist fruit rolls or welches fruit snacks. There are lists online as well. We make most of our baked goods using the same recipes we've always used, just replacing wheat flour with a rice flour mix (2 parts rice flour, 1 part tapioca flour, 1 part potato flour, with a tablespoon of xanthan gum for every cup used) You can buy them at a healthfood store, but if you have an asian market in your area, you can buy it MUCH cheaper there. For example, at the HFC in our area, rice flour is $5 a pound. At the Chinese Mart in downtown, it's 60¢ a pound. Talk about mark up!

We have two that are absolutely intolerant. Look at craft supplies at school as well. If he's sensitive, he could use that, and if he touches his food or face, still be affected. Look at glue, stickers, paint, etc. If he eats at a table that has wheat crumbs, he could still be affected.

Many people say that they've tried a gluten free diet with their child and it didn't help, but most likely there were infractions that they didn't know about, ESP if they are in school where you can't see them trading their snacks, etc.
