We have a 4 month old Wheaten .

We are still not sure if we want to have her groomed , like the show dogs .

Or if we want her to be shaggy !

We havent really seen any shaggy ones , but the groomed ones look so cool, soft, and fluffy !

Any, suggestions !?

  1. Regardless of how you want to have her end up looking, you should have regular groomings to keep her feet, nails, ears, eyes and groin area from getting out of hand. If you have her groomed to look like a wheaten have your groomer use a #2 or #1 snap-on comb on her neck and back and scissor her legs. Her head should be done with a 5F or 7F blade. If you choose to leave her shaggy be prepared to brush her, alot! Her coat won't fall out, you have to brush out and strip or cut dead coat off of a terrier. The soft coated wheaten has a softer coat than most other terriers, thus the name, and some people choose to have the whole coat clippered off exept the characteristic "fall" in front of the eyes and the beard.

  3. Most of the time grooming is more for the health and safety of the dog not for the looks. If you choose to not have her groomed to be like the show dogs it would be a good idea to at least have her trimmed a bit making sure the nails and ears get attention. Have fun with that baby:>)

  4. Whether or not you want her to look like a show dog is up to you.

If you want her coat kept longer, that means a lot of combing and brushing on a regular basis!

A lot of the wheatens that come into my grooming shop get shaved pretty short because the owners prefer that.

Getting her used to being groomed (brushed and combed) and handled now is a great idea. The groomer will thank you later. :)

  5. For the time being, leave her shaggy.  You don't want a puppy looking like an adult, as people expect better manners from an adult.  With her being a Wheaten, her manners will be a little off until at least 1 year of age.

You do, however, need to get her to the groomers for a puppy tidy, bath and toe nail trim soon, so she will know who the groomer is and what they do at the shop.

Show grooming is quite soft and fluffy - but this style requires daily combing (not brushing - as brushing only skims the top of the coat).

Many times, Wheaten owners want their dog in a show trim, but they are so matted that it would torture the dog to do so.  At our shop, if the dog is severely matted, we will not comb the mats out.  The owner, if persistent, can comb the dog out and bring it back, or find another shop to torture the dog.

Right now she is shedding her puppy coat, and that will mat up quickly.  Get her her Bordetella (if it hasn't been done already), and set up a puppy grooming soon.

  6. It's really up to you.

Either way, make sure you are brushing regularly and thoroughly, otherwise you will end up having to have her shaved.

Even if you keep her shaggy, she will benefit from a regular brush, bath, and tidy up at the groomer's.
