Wheaton Warrenville loses to underdog Naperville North 2-1: High School Volleyball
Wheaton Warrenville boys volleyball team was in shock as they lost to Naperville North by 2-1 on Tuesday. Having defeated the number one ranked team, Naperville is now heading towards the Hoffman Estates High School to play the state tournament quarter-finals.
The Huskies have not only ensured a seat into the quarter-finals on Friday, they have also earned the champions title of the Illinois Math and Science Academy sectional championship by winning against Wheaton. After the match the following final set scores
were released, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-23.
With their recent win, the Huskies have been able to improve their overall season wins to 28. These victories have been accomplished at the cost of suffering 11 defeats so far. In contrast to this, the performance statistics of Wheaton shows a better record
which is reflective of their number one ranking. The Tigers have secured 36 wins with an impressive three losses.
Danny Boryca, who is the libero for the Huskies, made the following comments after his team had won the match, "We weren’t going to let these guys, who have beaten us six times in the past two years, affect us not going downstate. We’ve been on a real hot
streak lately and we’ve been just kind of going with it.”
The first set of the match had the spectators on the edge of their seats all through. For themost part of the game, the Huskies and Wheaton remained almost neck to neck with each other. Neither team was letting the other take the lead, which resulted in
the opening set coming to a tie a total of 16 times. The game was still tied at 16-16 when the Huskies were able to step up and go on a 2-0 run. Once they had the lead, the Huskies did not rest until they had bagged the first set of the game at 25-21.
The loss of the first set of the match did not go down well with the Tigers. They responded by rallying together and putting in an increased effort in the second set of the game. After a bit of a struggle in the initial part of the set, the Tigers were able
to take the lead at 18-13. The Huskies were not about to give up easily and responded by closing in the gap at 21-20. However, the Tigers managed to even the match by securing a win at 25-22.
The third was a tough struggle between the two teams but the Huskies prevailed by winning the set at 25-23.
The upcoming quarter-final match of the Huskies is scheduled to be played against Oak Park-River Forest.
