Question:

Wheely Bins & Council tax?

by  |  earlier

Once upon a time we used to get our Bin emptied once a week and the bin men would come and collect it from our back garden or from wherever we kept it.

Nowadays we are supplied with a bigger bin but we have to put it out in the street otherwise it will not be collected. This practice is to be reduced to fortnightly very soon.

If this was private enterprize then the customer would expect a price reduction, not a price rise. I'm all for recycling and don't mind that this will end up fortnightly but what I do mind is the councils are saving money by reducing their level of service but increasing year on year their charges for a reduced service.

What are your views or solutions to this

  1. Here we have 3 huge wheelie bins, black for general waste, blue for recycled stuff and brown for garden waste, I don't mind sorting it but they empty in rotation, with all the packaging we get now the blue bin is always full, we had to get an extra large blue bin.

Yes Shazzzz I remember the days when they used to come into your garden for the bin put it on their backs and take it out to the cart tip it out and bring it back?

My Mum always used to tip them, I don't.

If the top is not fully shut they don't take them.

    Bugger tipping them.

  2. Oh it will get worse. After two weeks anything that rots will do in your bin and when it gets hot the bit stinks to high heaven and that attracts the flies. Its a real bug bear of mine, especially as i have to sort out the recycled stuff for them into one of the tree wheelie bins we have, and get told off for chucking the wrong type of plastic in the bin. What gets me is they wont tell you which types of plastic they can recycle

  3. We have had fortnightly bin collections for about two years. We have a grey bin and a green one. They grey bin is for recyclables and the green is for ordinary non recyclables. the downside is that the bin smells more in the summer, but the upside we are recycling more than before. Thats gotta be a good thing. Right?

  4. Shazzz  m'dear, its a ******* rip off.

To be honest bin disposal is about all I pay my Council tax for.  I get nothing else out of my local Council.  They are completely useless, unhelpful and incompetent.

Yet to have my bins emptied once a week costs £885 per year apparently.

Its a complete rip off.  The neanderthals who empty our wheelie bins aren't even capable of putting the correct bin back in front of the correct house (we live in a victorian terraced street with no front gardens).  I mean, my house is number "21" and there's a big "21" painted in white on the front of my bin but I still without fail find my frigging bin in front of number 19 or number 25 or number 22.

I mean how hard is it?!

As for only collecting every 2 weeks well thats a public health hazard and those bins are going to stink in the summer.  Presumably they'll charge you more in Council Tax to pay for the Rat catchers when the place gets overrun.

    Like I said, rip off.

  5. Refuse to accept it and demand the council obeys the law or surrenders its Rubbish collection service to the electorate.

Also demand an instant 10% refund on your council tax bill, you pay for your rubbish to be collected weekly.

  6. Well said tall paul and others.Recently,my council advertised for a Fly tip consultant  stroke  manager new 4x4 provided[seen it ] £21000 up depends on experience This is what you pay for as well as we are conducting a survey,eg do you want weekly or fortnightly collections Surprisingly it comes back fortnightly, and i know hundreds of people, and i cant find one that says fortnightly, but i do notice the name of the company doing the survey WELL WELL TUT TUT

  7. its a scam. the things these people are allowed to get away with. When Maggie introduced the Poll Tax we had a Burma situation here and several countries complained how we were beaten up and locked up.

Anyway, Major changed it to Community Charge" and it doubled since . Its a laugh! And now they want us to pay for rubbish collection too. They are full os S

  8. It's appalling but even worse for payers of business rates who get NOTHING for the money that's extorted from them (we call it legalised theft!). I am also for recycling but think those who DO should be rewarded rather than those who DON'T being penalised even more (carrot & donkey effect hopefully).

  9. Councils are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, courtesy of government funding and new land-fill taxes.

Wheely bins fortnightly and ploughing money into recycling centres seems to be the most logical way of keeping the books balanced.

We have fortnightly collections. Our recycling bin is always full, and our general waste and garden/kitchen waste bins are only ever half full, and we're a family of 5.

Check your council tax breakdown carefully and you will find about 70% goes to the Police. When did you last see a police man in your street?

  10. I agree with you completely. But what angers me is that our so called 'Green' council can't even be bothered to include glass in the recycling collection. So therefore they're saving more money. They are greedy and use alot of our money on worthless and fruitless projects. It's definately time for change.

  11. We have the same thing. The food and green emptied once every fortnight ,always have maggots crawling up it.The black bin does too because i do not want to have a food waste in the kitchen and put it straight in the bin so maggots are in the black bin too.

    Once a week please.

As for glass and tins, once a month.

We could fill it in a weekend.

I recyle everything myself so are we trying to get rid of garbage men?
