Whelan may quit Wigan
Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has admitted that he would consider quitting the club if the fans ever forced out a manager that he employed.
Whelan was put under intense pressure at the start of the Premier League season to sack the manager when Wigan got off to their worst Premier League start in history. Roberto Martinez's side conceded ten goals in their first two home league games. The chairman received a lot of letters from fans asking for the manager to be let go.
Whelan said: "I rate Roberto highly and said to the fans, if you want his head, you'll get mine as well. Had they (the supporters) insisted, and even if we would have lost at Tottenham and they start crying for his head and had he asked to go, I would definitely have resigned with him."
Fortunately for Martinez and Whelan the team secured a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, creating some confidence around the club. It's important this confidence continues in order to keep the club out of a very bad situation.
Turn things around
Wigan is an ideal case of inconsistency and unpredictability in the Premier League. Roberto Martinez is still mastering his trade in Premier League management and this has produced some very poor results for the side. The problem is that good results are often forgotten when the club has to endure a huge defeat.
It's important to remember that the club also suffered a few bad defeats last season. However, the fans and the club showed the manager faith after the side were beaten 9-1 by Spurs and 7-0 away at Chelsea. If there ever was a time when the manager would be sacked, it would have been then, but they stuck with him.
Wigan looked a lot more solid in the win over Spurs, so Martinez seems to have turned things around in defence.
Wigan is not one of the biggest teams in the Premier League. The club relies on a stable structure and good leadership. This being said, even when Martinez gets his team to play good football, then a heavy defeat now and then is inevitable.
