  1. Rich people.  Ever been to a mansion?

    Poor people couldn't afford the extra money that a hallway creates.  It was more cost effective to just go from room to room.  

    As the middle class grew, they wanted what the rich had.  Houses were no different.


  2. This is only a guess, but I think it was just a slow development from the hall.

    In old houses, as you say, the rooms all lead directly off one another.  But there was often a big room called the hall that is connected to several rooms along its sides.

    I think this was gradually narrowed over time and became a corridor.

    My evidence is that Americans call corridors "hallways".
