  1. "when 2012 happens"

Sure, the year 2012 will happen, unless we create a new calendar by then.

However, nothing "special" will happen in 2012.

There is presently the "Big 2012 Hoax Off"

(a hoax is a lie that is perpetrated with the goal of fooling as many people as possible).

It started when someone saw that the Mayan day-count calendar used by Mayan astronomers (not by the Mayan people) would pass from one "Long Count" to the next.

A bit like when our calendar passed from the year 1999 to the year 2000.  Many of us remember all the hoaxes about the end-of-the-world or exploding computers and so on.

A day-count calendar is simply a calendar that count the days (as in "Day number 370,621").  It is convenient for astronomy because you can calculate very long intervals without having to worry about how many days in a month or which year is a leap year.  We (modern astronomers) use one called the Julian Day calendar.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_day

The Mayan 'normal' people used a 'normal' one-year calendar in their every day life, with the New Year Day falling on the day of Winter Solstice (the date we call December 21).

Mayan astronomers already knew about precession (so did the Babylonians and the Chinese and the Indian astronomers, thousands of years ago).  They also knew that the apparent position of the Solstice moved slowly but regularly around the celestial sphere.

They had arranged their astronomical calendar so that the Long Count would change on the day that the Sun would reach the Solstice position (December 21 for us, New Year's Day for them), on the year when the Solstice's apparent position would reach the thickest portion of the Milky Way.

For them, that was just a convenient way to set their own special calendar, to make calculations easier.  And for them (over a thousand years ago) that event was so far in the future that they did not much care.  The year we call 2012 was so far away.

All the 'predictions' about what could happen that day came well after the date was chosen.

The Mayan astronomers did write about astronomical events that will take place after the year we call 2012 (just like we can write about eclipses that will take place in the 3000s).  They give the dates using their own Mayan calendar.

Obviously, they expected neither the world nor their calendar to end.

After our own year 2000 (Y2k) end-of-the-world hoaxes, where some people made tons of money by scaring others, the trend continued.

Already in 2003 (the year Mars was supposed to become as big as the Moon, remember?), charlatans were selling a book on how to survive the end of the world (the fictitious planet Nibiru was coming here and its inhabitants would steal all our goods).

Well, the same charlatans, with the same Nibiru but with a lot of other invented lies, are again trying to scare us into buying the revised edition of that book.

But that's OK.  I managed to survive 2003 without buying their book.  I think I can survive 2012 without giving them money.

    ---

None of the doomsday predictions that you have heard about 2012 are true.  None.  Zero.

What is true (and totally NOT DANGEROUS) is:

The Sun will cross the Galactic equator (the Sun crosses the Galactic equator twice a year, every year, around December 21 and June 21).

The Solstice position will be very close to the Galactic equator (in fact, it crosses it early in 2013).  This does not have any effect at all on anything.

The Sun will NOT be in line with the Galactic centre.  It can't.  It always misses by at least 5.5 degrees.  Every December 21 for the last century and for the next century, the Sun passes within 6 degrees of the Galactic centre.  Does the world end every year?

There will be a maximum of activity (and sunspots) on the Sun.  There is such a maximum every 11 years.  It is a natural cycle that has been known for almost 400 years.

Do you know anyone older than 11? That means they survived the last maximum.  Older than 22? They survived 2.  Older than 55?  Wow, they survived five of them!

The reversal of Earth's magnetic polarity is something that happens on average every 700,000 years.  The process takes at least 1,000 years (and takes about 5,000 years on average).  When I was studying Earth's magnetism a few decades ago, the reversal had not begun yet (we are due).  So, if it takes a thousand year, it will certainly not be done in time for 2012.

The rest of the invented lies is not even possible.

Even Nibiru:  we know who invented the legend and under what circumstances.  The name Nibiru (in the ancient texts) really refers to the planet we call Jupiter -- and it is definitely not coming this way.

  2. No, there's no scientific proof that any apocalypse is set to happen in 2012 or any other year.  The people who write these books and make these movies are not scientists, but people who spew scientific-sounding jargon to fool people who just don't have the specialized knowledge to know better.  All they want is a little attention and money the easy way.  Unfortunately they don't care how their doomsaying affects real people.  They're selfish, misguided, and irresponsible; and we as a society shouldn't tolerate them or their shills.

If you're like any other normal teenager, you're going to live long past high school and have a wonderful life full of the normal ups and downs.  And with age will come the wisdom to see these hogwash claims for what they are.

  5. Short answer: no it is not going to happen. 2012 will be followed by 2013, 2014, and so on, and barring accidents you will live to a ripe old age.

The longer answer will tell you that there have been at least five dates offered for the end of the world from December 31st 1999 until now, four of which have come and gone without incident. Add that to the countless others over the centuries of recorded human history and you will find that predicitons of global disater are nothing new and invariably turn out to be wrong. Patrick Moore wrote an excellent book on the subject. It's called Countdown. I recommend it.

  6. guess you are too young to remember that was going to happen

    when we broke 2000

and there were naysayers that said the world would end in 1988 and 1989

so get a good night's rest

worry gives you wrinkles (LOL) so stop it!

really want to learn? get in a church that is teaching the book of Revelation from the Bible - great insight

    all the best

  7. what if I tell you tommorow will be Big Bang?

  8. If it's going to happen, then I don't think there's anything we could do about it.  No point getting scared.  There's a book you can buy online called "Planet X Forecast and 2012 Survival Guide".  There's some helpful tips in there, such as having a plan and a to-go pack.  But basically I think we're just screwed regardless if this is real.

  9. No!  This question is asked several times a week.  The world was also supposed to end in 1999 but somebody forgot to do anything about it.

The only thing that will happen in 2012 is that Britain will have a massive bill for the olympics.

The ancient Mayan calendar runs in cycles of 5125.36 years and one of these cycles ends on 21 December 2012. Some people assume this means the Mayans thought that was when the world ends, but it is no different from someone publishing a 5 year diary that ends on 31 December 2012. It doesn't mean the end of the world, it means its time to publish a new calendar.

The website religioustolerance.org lists around 100 predictions of the end of the world that turned out to be wrong, and these are just a sample of the better known ones. It also lists 9 dates over the next two years and 23 more between 2010 and 2100. Dont expect any of them to be right.

The predictions of the supposed planet X or Nibiru don't have any real science behind them and are well debunked on the website below.  The main promoter of this idea is a woman called Nancy who claims that aliens speak to her.

  10. Calendars exist for keeping track of the passage of time, not for predicting the future. The Mayan astronomers were clever, and they developed a very complex calendar. Ancient calendars are interesting to historians, but of course they cannot match the ability we have today to keep track of time, or the precision of the calendars currently in use. The main point, however, is that calendars, whether contemporary or ancient, cannot predict the future of our planet or warn of any bad things to happen on a specific date such as 2012.

  11. 2012 will happen, but since most people of this world have their heads stuck up their ***, they will never know the seriousness of the event.

Not trying to be cruel. But at least some people are least talking about it. The more you guys talk about it, the more you 'may' get it into your heads. That's good! It may even turn the tide in the consciousness upheavel for this world. The more people prepare, the more likely we can get out of this jam. Those who wish to ignore it all/opposing it, they aren't helping any of us!

Goodluck, and prepare yourself since you are open to it.

  12. NO its in NOT going to happen!

Nothing spectacular will happen in 2012 (unless you count the Olympics in London).

It is just a myth which mysteriously propagates (mostly because of the History Channel and YouTube)

The interpretation of the Mayan calendar thing is just plain wrong – it’s just the end of a cycle. And since calendars are based on astronomical motions of one kind or another, they are inherently cyclic. Our western calendar ends on December 31st every year!

Planet X/Nibiru does not exist. If it did we would have found it by now. We have mapped the sky in the infrared several times in the last 25 years (including WMAP, IRAS etc), and it would show up. It is not there. We would have found it if it existed. So all the nonsense about the return of Nibiru/Planet X is just that – nonsense

There is no scientific evidence for the existence of Nibiru

Furthermore, at the distance it must be to hit us in a little over 4 years, it would be reflecting enough light from the sun to be detectable.

Thanx to previous question from Brant and answer from bikenbeer2000, we know how bright it should be by now – it would have a apparent magnitude of 7.4 – which would not be visible with the naked eye – but easily visible in a modest telescope and would have been spotted by amateur. If there was a conspiracy to keep it quiet – it would be out of the bag by now.

Ask someone where it is supposed to be, get a pair of binoculars and look for it.

Furthermore, it is supposed to be in orbit around a brown dwarf. We have detected brown dwarfs at much larger distances than the alleged distance of the sun’s mythical brown dwarf companion, so why haven’t we seen this “star:?

The videos on YouTube that purport to have evidence are disingenuous to say the least. They put together pictures of other objects (e.g. Jupiter, comets even a dust shell around a distant red giant star) and try to scare people. There is no validity to their claims. They present NO EVIDENCE at all.

As for the predicted catastrophes – the most popular one seems to be the Pole Shift!

The sun will have a pole reversal that year – it has one every 11 years – it is not a problem.

The earth’s magnetic field is less predictable –

but is still nothing to worry about: we know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process of reversing polarity- if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

Now let’s tackle the “Galactic Alignment”

Here’s a nice site that explains what it means, and explains that is does not happen on December 21st 2012:  http://alignment2012.com/whatisGA.htm

Also see the wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_Al...

which tells you that the precise alignment of the solstice with the Galactic equator was in 1998. It did not cause problems. The Galactic Equator is purely a human construct – not a physical thing. And we do not get any closer to the black hole in the center, which remains approximately 8000 parsecs (26,000 light years) away.

Now relax and get some sleep...

  13. 2012 will inevitably lead to 2013.  At that time, there are reliable predictions that some new doomsday prediction will be announced.  This is based on the 2005, 2001, and 2000 doomsday predictions, and others.

Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion  and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage.  But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to  solve the truly serious problems that face us -- and we risk becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along.

  14. is WHAT really going to happen?

    can't you even SAY it?

Pick your favorite doom and I will explain to you why it is baloney.

(except that Hopi thing, I have no idea what that is about.)

<edit>  wow, that Demondope guy is really really dumb.  Go have a beer or something... chill.  Remember my Mantra... "If a thousand fools tell you mud is pudding, it is still just mud."

<edit> hey, SexyPussycat... Nostrildamus never ONCE PRE-dicted anything!   Every one of his "predictions" were translated from his gibberish AFTER the fact.  Every d**n One.  Now, was he a genius, or are people just really good as seeing faces in the dark?

  15. First off, relax.  The whole thing about 2012 is just a bunch of internet spammers messing with your mind.  We are NOT all going to die just because the Mayan calendar ends on the day that we, using the Gregorian calendar, say is December 21, 2012.

The Mayan civilization, which basically vanished some 700 years ago, had a variety of calendars of varying lengths.  Just as we count days, weeks, months, years, decades and centuries, they had a series of cycles, too.  Their "Long Count" calendar covered the span of several millenia.  Well, the last one they "published" before being swallowed up by other civilizations had a long cycle that "ends" in December 2012.  That doesn't mean the universe is going to end, just that their calendar is done, and it is time to publish a new one.  But, ooops, the Mayans aren't around any more, ergo, no new calendar.

So relax!  It's all a bunch of rahooey designed by the scammers to separate you from your money!  Pay them no mind.  It really is nothing to be concerned about.

  16. As for the 2012 doomsday junk, no.

Anyone can meet their maker any time that HE wishes.  Not wanting to sound like a downer or anything but EVERYONE will die some day.  A simple fall and bump on the head could result in skull fracture and death.  You could be hit by a bus.  You could eat a bad mushroom.  Anything simple can happen to anyone on any day.  The thing to do is to not let that rule your life.  Make your life a wonderful life.  Live it with goodness, grace, faith, kindness, peace, and happiness.  By doing this you will be ready to meet your maker when that day comes.    There is not even one person on the face of the earth who will live forever.  The trick is to make life a good life while you are here.  If you still have problems, yo should speak to your church clergy about this.  They can help put this in a better perspective for you.

  18. Too many so called 'co-incidences' piling up!

Iranian nukes, Russia/Georgia conflict, economic problems, REX 84, FEMA coffins, FEMA camps, secret prisons, Patriot Act, tapping phones, reading e-mails, RFID Verichips, Operation Urban Warrior, Operation Sudden Impact, MJTF, Project Bluebeam, LHC, Project Mockingbird, Agenda 21, NESARA, entomopters, DARPA monstrosities, these pretend elections, Real ID, vile Bush executive orders regarding martial law and putting people into work groups, warrantless searches, end of Habeas Corpus, and the rise of a new character called 'Homegrown Terrorists' as specified in Senate Bill S.1959 which will be anyone against the North American Union and the New World Order especially Christians!

  19. The 2012 thing is bunk. there is no science behind this nonsense, so don't worry.

    http://www.dailycommonsense.com/2012-exp...

So, I'm going to party like its 1999, just like I did in 1999 when I was told my toaster would explode and my desktop would attack me and I would die without electricity and water just because my computers calender would think it is 1900. LOL!

How many people made a killing off of businesses just by flashing a few BIOS chips that year??

  20. Im not sure if it was the mayans or nostradamus, but one of them predicted the end of the world on December 23, 2012, as well the September 11th. Something that is very weird, is that the Mayan Calendar stops at 2012. they made no predictions after that year....that is strange.
