When's the best time to look for snakes?

I seem to have no luck when I'm hunting for snakes. My dad sees EVERYTHING. One time he was cutting the grass up on our hill and he saw an ALBINO. Another time he accidentally ran over a turtle with a lawnmower... how the turtle got up there, no one seems to be able to figure out.

Just today around noon time I saw a red-tail swoop down on our hill and came up with a big fat snake between its talons. I searched that hill since about 7 and checked every bush at least three times (some got searched 5 ) and just found at least half a dozen crickets and a big grasshopper or two.

I'm not looking to hurt or capture one, I'm just being a kid who wants to find a dumb snake. :) When do I have a better chance of finding a small, harmless snake, like a garter or something? What do they eat, crickets? I'm in NJ if it helps in any way, which I doubt.

  1. well i find alot of snakes between noon and 3 pm. they come back out at around 6 pm. I find them under rocks in tall grass and under logs. Your dad sees snakes when hes cutting grass because the vibration scares the snakes i dont know why tho. I used to walk around by my dad when he cut grass and i would see alot of snakes. Just follow him and you should be able to see some snakes. I have 2 pet snakes and they are active aroung 12 and come back out at night

  2. Here's something that I've done for years and have never came back empty handed.  After a very warm day that ends with some quick rain showers toward days end, drive down a road that is not traveled very often.  You'll definitely be rewarded by the snakes that have came out to raise their body temps on the road, due to the rain showers.

  3. when its hot you want to look inside dead logs or fallen trees because they use this to either lay eggs or to get off dead skin with they shed

second if its too hot like here in fl. check under things that look as if its been sitting there for a will like boards or old barrells its usually something damped or moist or near water this protects them from getting burnt by the sun and last instead of looking on the ground look in the trees snakes are great climbers and the ones that climb really only come down for small prey shut as mice rabbits or any rodents and no snakes don't eat grasshoppers frogs on occasions but not grasshoppers and be careful  because in new jersey you have to very poisonous snake which are the northern copperhead and the timber rattlesnake these two snake are common up north and are very deadly

  4. they come out at night and morning and eat baby mice

  5. When I was in NH I saw a snake...No idea what type. It was summer time in the afternoon, in the tall grass. Oh NJ well I dont know then

    I tried.

Smaller snakes eat crickets and stuff. but larger snakes eat different things.
