  1. Now would be a good time to study. Most juniors take the SAT in the spring of their junior year and then retake it if needed during the fall of their senior year. However, you should take it whenever you feel ready.

The best way to study is to do lots and lots and lots of practice tests. I recommend collegeboard's The Official Guide to the SAT. It has 8 practice tests and is very useful. Other good books are Princeton Review, Kaplan, Peterson's and Barrons.

If you are motivated and determined to study regularly and you don't need someone to push you to study, then you will do well by just studying with books on your own. SAT prep classes are a good idea if you don't have a lot of self-discipline. They are pretty expensive so try studying by yourself first to see what your scores on practice tests are.

  2. Fifteen minutes ago.  Seriously.  It's never too early to start studying for the SAT. I started studying as early as seventh grade, and it payed off with a score good enough to get into the Ivy League.  I think that those classes are very expensive and not necessarily more effective than studying on your own with a test prep book.  I recommend The Official SAT Study Guide for test prep material.  You should definitely plan to take the SAT sometime this year, preferrably the first semester of your junior year.  That way, if you don't like your score, you can study some more and take it again later in the school year and hopefully not have to deal with it in your senior year, when you'll be busy applying to colleges.
