  1. I am sure he can miss the presence of the other dog. If it was a playmate, I am sure he'll really miss him.

  2. I don't know if they understand death, but I do know they miss them and they grieve.

Peanut, my chihuahua, was just a baby when he came to live with Chaz, my Keeshond, and when Chaz pass on, Peanut grieved for weeks.

  3. yes they can sense that something is wrong with them they can do this with any living thing and if you just get rid of the other dog before they ever see it they will still know that they are gone and look for them.

  4. Dogs do miss other dogs if the have bonded with each other. When my German Shepherd died my Chihuahua spent weeks looking for his friend.  It has been 1 year since my shepherd died and I swear there are days that my chihuahua still looks for him.  I don't think they understand death, but the know something is missing.

  5. I think that the dog will notice that something is different because his or her friend isn't around any longer and they may often become depressed and mope around.

However, I don't think that they understand the concept of death and that the dog won't be coming back.  This is probably a good thing though.

  6. Yes they do, I had two dogs for 5 yrs they loved each other very much, the male got sick with liver problems and died. That night the female cried and howled a low pitiful   howl. like she was weeping, all night, broke my heart even more.  Took her weeks to get over missing him, I cried right along with her. So if this happens to you, be there for the dog that is grieving the loss to.  : (

  7. If you are asking if a dog knows in general, I would say yes if it saw the other dog die.  We have 2 dogs and my mom just died and they both knew what was going on.  The one sits and stares up the steps for her all the time and the other one goes up and lays at the bottom of her bed looking for her.  I think they sense these things.

  8. I dont know if a dog knows about another dog dying but I do know that my dog noticed when my cats died (not at the same time). He sniffed around the area that the one died at alot and whimpered a little and layed there even though the cat was mean to him :(

I know cats notice dogs die too, they pretty much do the same thing my dog did without the whimpering part.

RIP: Buttons, Buffy, Havana, Heidi and Jasper

  9. If this happened to your dogs then i think the other dog will realize the other isnt there. I think you can possibly get another companion for the other dog.

  10. Absolutely. They can sense when something is wrong, they mourn the loss if they were close and they can become dependent upon their human. It isn't just when another pet dies, either. When my dad passed away his dog laid outside his bedroom door and whimpered for three days. My cat crawled into one of his field boots (he was in the Army) and would not be moved. They sense so much more than we give them credit for.
