When Bernie Ecclestone talks everyone listens (Part 2)
Bernie, the man who is ruling the empire of Formula One with an iron fist, and a strong head, talked to the media as he confirmed to stay intact with the sport.
Isn’t it strange to hear from one of the most wealthy, powerful and successful men on earth saying that all these three things - money, power and success means ‘zero’ to him? But that is what Ecclestone stated as he told that
he only works and does not need anything else, “I just do what I think I have to do. If you send me to do a job, I would do the best that I could for you. Is that being successful?”
However, when asked what the 79 year old values the most; he was quick to reply the he would not mind being without money, but success is very important. Success for him is all that one does and achieves and not having success
means having done nothing.
The man who steps out of his door everyday to see a limousine waiting for him and a police escort following him all the way, denies that he has a phenomenal success story. He rather sounded very modest, although many would disagree
for he has that trait, when asked about his achievements over the years exclaiming that he has only been a little luckier than the others. For him many believe that he is always the right man, at the right place and has the guts to drain out the most out of
the opportunities he gets.
While recalling various events of his life, the Supremo narrated that during the days when Britain was at war with the Germans, a warplane fell just meters from him while he was picking potatoes to earn some money. It fell so close
to him that he flew off due to the landing force and landed metres away. Now, while recollecting that day he announced that it was a moment when he realised for the first time that he is luckier than many and then the belief kept on strengthening over the
years.
Talking about his career moves, Ecclestone said that he had always wanted to be a businessman and had faith that he would be one day, only that he never knew how successful.
His love for race took him to the track at an early age, but soon he realised that driving was a full time activity and his priority was running his business. Though, he soon left racing but he proved lucky once again. Both his
dreams fulfilled as he did not have to leave the sport and yet he was a businessman, when he bought a Formula One team called ‘Brabham’.
While talking about what made him excel so brilliantly he explained, “Probably others just haven’t been prepared to give up what you have to give up to do a proper job. I have given a lot of things up because of this.”
As Formula One keeps swelling and growing, it has become a sport that deals with bigger amounts of money than any other. The crown-less king proclaimed that it is not the money he has ever focused on. He rather believes that wealth
is only the by-product of all you do.
Ecclestone was a successful businessman even at the age of 20 and now he pleasantly announces that he made good deals at that time also; only that now he has learnt the art better.
Well, on the paddock many say that ‘it still takes 12 team principals to make one Bernie Ecclestone’ which is true in a number of ways. When the CEO was asked to comment on this, he smiled and told that he is not much concerned
about what others talk about him. He only believes that what is good for Formula One would definitely be good for everyone around including the teams and the companies.
