When Daniel Pearl was killed, did they saw off his head while he was still alive?

I saw it on a website called ogrish which no longer exists.  But I saw the video of him, and it was very sad.  He was very much alive when they did it.  They make sure their hostages are alive when they do that.  It's so sad how they have no soul and no heart.
