When East Germany merged with the West German economy, East German consumers indicated a preference for Mercedes-Benz automobiles over Volkswagens. However, when they converted their savings into Euros, they purchased Volkswagens. How would you explain this?

  1. I think there is a big difference between "wish thinking" and reality. If someone would heave to mention his dream car it would often be a car which is far too expensive to buy.

But when you have to make the real decision it is mostly an economic question. And Volkswagen automobiles are much cheaper than those from Mercedes-Benz.

  2. Quite simply the conversion rate did not give German consumers the disposable income required to buy the more expensive mercedes brand.
