Question:

When/How do you begin using a stage name?

I had planned on using a stage name when I began to get some work. I am with an agency now and have also found a few student projects on my own. I auditioned using my real name because it is printed on my head shots, however I do not want my real name listed in the credits. Is it too late to ask for my stage name to be used, and if it isn't, how do I begin using it (I mean, do I just ask the director, do I need to begin auditioning under this name also, does my agency even need to know I use a stage name?)

Thanks.

  1. First of all, unless your name is difficult to pronounce or spell, there's really no reason to change it.

You can ask for any name to be used on your credits.

And of course you should let your agent know you're changing your name!

You don't need to do anything legal to change your name, as long as you are not doing it for "fradulent" reasons.  For pay, you may wish to open a bank account under both your names.

  2. Why do you need a stage name?  These days, many actors use their real name.  If you are SAG/AFTRA go to their office and change your name.
