When I'm on paint and I am editing a picture but I messed up with the paint tool. Help!?

When I'm on paint and I am editing a picture but I messed up with the paint brush tool.....when i try to undo it only erases up to 3 times. When I try to erase the area of paint I messed up on it erases the picture below the paint too! Is there any way I can just erase the area I messed up on with out starting all over? Help!
