  1. I totally have the same problem on long sets.  One thing I tried was to use the alphabet.  First lap think of things that begin with A, second lap think of things that begin with B, etc. That will get you 26 at least.

  2. Make each digit of your hand a different value. Each lap a different finger. Thumb, index, middle, ring, pinky.

  3. I know the basic split times I have done for several years. So, if I lose count, I know by my watch after 250, 500, 750, 1000 meters.

  4. i find it really hard, the other day at my practice, i lost count of the 2 400's we were doing, and went like, an 900, idk, and i could have made the interval 2! try counting by 50's, or just keep repeating how far u have went in ur head

  5. Yep, I do the same thing.  I'm fine counting if I'm left undisturbed, but once something or someone interupts my routine I easily forget where i was in the count.

Like the first answerer says, I know about how long it takes me to complete my sets.  So by checking my watch I know at least roughly where I should have been in my count.  That's about the best I can offer.

There are mechanical lap counters that you can purchase from good swimming supply places.  They provide a mechanical or electronic counter that keeps track for you.  Usually they have a counter display and a touch pad that you hit each time you make your turn at the wall.  I've never used one myself, I'm not quite that anal about getting a precise count I guess!

  6. use the rings on the laneropes. every time you get back to wichever end of the pool you started at, cound the number of rings you have moved and multiply by two

  7. just keep repeating the number of laps you're on to a tune of a song. it helps.
