  1. There are many ways for a company to get your email address, you needn't email them for it to happen, that is why we get so much unsolicited mail.  Delete them on arrival, don't open anything you don't know who it is from.

One way is when you forward email, always use BCC for your contacts addresses to keep them hidden.  Ever get an email with a long list of contacts before you get to the text of the message?  Before you forward it, get in the habit of deleting the names.  Think about it, if you send an email to 10 of your friends, they in turn send it to 10 each of their friends that comes to 110 people with your email address, & it only generates more as it gets forwarded.

Don't do any online petitions for anything, for one they are hoaxes & won't be accepted as ligitoimate signed petitions.  For it to be real, you have to go to the web sight & give a name & zip code for it to be legitimate.

When you surf the web, many sites put cookies on your PC, this helps them to know what your habits are.  Get in the habit of clearing your cookies & temporary internet folders.

Have a separate email address just for signing up for stuff.  If you belong to any public message boards, Yahoo groups, etc. many times your email address is viewable.  One way to check this is to google your email address to see where it takes you.  Also google your real name & screen names.  If you have a social networking site such as myspace with a http/URL link, just type in some things you may put in your blog to see what shows, do this also on google.

If you use Yahoo mail, check your public profile to see what is listed.  http://members.yahoo.com

In Yahoo mail, at the bottom of the page, it says they collect info on you, you can 'opt' out of this by clicking the link.

Because of 'bots' there are areas of even this forum that generate s.p.@.m from certian words, etc., this will increase s p @@ m in your inbox

Hope this gives you some idea
