When I bring coffee home from Costa Rica, do I have to ship it to myself?

I have heard that I have to do that. Am I allowed to just stick it in my bag? Or what do I need to do with customs?

Thanks.

  1. I just got back from Costa Rica on Tuesday and I put eight bags of coffee in my check in luggage and it came up fine. Granted I rolled a towel over them because I was slightly paranoid, but I had no problem.

I also went to Cafe Britt and am in love with the Poas as well!!!! lol. They've got great deals now (8 bags for $36 US plus a free canvas bag with it). So I stocked up.

I hope you have a great time! I absolutely loved it!

  2. I brought home three bags without any problems.  You should be fine.  If your coffee is from Cafe Britt, you may be able to order it there and have some sent home to you.  If you buy enough (usually six bags) you can get free shipping.  It'll save you some room in your bags.

...I'm so jealous.  I miss Costa Rica.  Oh, and I love the Poas coffee from Cafe Britt.

  3. You can just stick it in you bag.  I have brought several bags of coffee over time and never had any problems.

I find that it is better to get the coffee in the regular Costa Rican super markets (cheaper than in most other places) and then just put it inside my checked-in bags.  I usually bring a few small bags as gifts for friends, and a couple large ones for me.
