When I call out from my kitchen phone and hang up on an answering machine my phone rings. Why is this?

GadgetQueen isn't far off.  It's called "ringback", and it indicates the line is still open.

you hung up too fast for the phone to register the hang up.  slow it down, like you're not in a rush and just casualy hanging up and it should be fine... mine does it from time to time when I'm quick to the drop.
