When I close my laptop then open it, random programs stop working. Why?

I have Vista...

If I close my laptop for a while, then open it windows pop up and say bla bla bla has stopped working. These programs are totally random. Sometimes it cause the scroller on my mouse pad to stop working.

If there is anything you can do to help please answer! It's really annoying!

Review what sequence(s) your computer goes through for when you close the lid...it might just be getting to many mixed signals and not shutting down, or stand by, or whatever you have it set for.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Power Schemes; here you'll want to find the option that will most closely fit what you want your system to behave like when you close the lid.  

I recommend 'Hibernate' which must be enabled (in same Power Options window, on the Hibernate tab, check 'enable').

This is the quickest way to get the system back in working order.
