  1. you better check out the jumper settings of your HDD. and main is with that 256 MB RAM obviously it will be bit slower. only option is to upgrade your PC.

  2. use both the connecting cables for the hdd.

if this do not resolve the problem, there may be some software conflicts.

  3. The problem is that the HDD requires a 2.0 USB port, (ismail mentioned this on his response) your PC has the slower USB 1.x ports.  You will either have to purchase a PCI card that has USB 2.0 ports on it so the HDD will perform faster or you will have to live with it.

Or you would have to purchase a new machine..:(

  4. I think its your computer. You need atleast 2GHZ and 512mb ram with usb 2 slot

  5. Dear frnd you havn't mentioned u r motherboard type here, any way u r using portable hdd that is usb 2.0 compatible and u r motherboard has usb 1.1 only so u r usb hdd works slowly, and/or u r USB HDD having some virus, scan u r full usb hdd and try using 100% free antivirus

  6. if your external hard disk and pc have e-sata ports try connecting through it.... fire wire is also lot faster
