When I do an each way bet, how do I know if it will pay a quarter or a fifth of the odds?

it depends how many runners,and the bookies tightness

easy:

non handicap races = 5-7 runners 1/4, 1-2

                                      8 or more runners 1/5, 1-2-3

handicap = 5-7 runner 1/4, 1-2

                    8-11 runners 1/5, 1-2-3

                    12-15 runners 1/4, 1-2-3

                    16 or more runners 1/4, 1-2-3-4

when you can remember that, i'll give you a job in my shop ;-)
