Question:

When I order toner for my laser printer, do I need to order a new drum as well?

I have a Brother HL-2040 laser (non-color) printer. The toner is getting low, and I've never had to order toner for it in the year I've had it. So I've never replaced this before. I just want to know if I have to buy a new drum for it when I replace the toner.

Thanks in advance!

  1. No you do not, the drum should last 3-4 cartridge cycles.

The printer will give you a warning when it is time to replace the drum.

  2. This printer can be a little tricky. Is this the original toner which came with the printer? If so, it is missing a $4 part called the starter gear. Without this part, a refill of toner will not work. If you want accurate information on refilling this, see http://ccs-digital.com/northbay.html
