  1. Yahoo developed the "recommendation" option in an attempt to get more people onto their message boards. It was a form of "operant conditioning"-- or a way to reinforce behavior. For example, I post a message on the board that denigrates "liberals," I get a recommendation, I feel good about my post. I post again, I get another recommendation. I go back after that and repeat the same kind of message and keep getting rewarded, which gives Yahoo the numbers they want to tell corporate advertisers all the people using their services. They make more money and can charge more for advertising when that number goes higher and higher. The scheme of using operant conditioning worked so well that Yahoo's servers were swamped with people recommending posts, which slowed down the whole system too much. Now, they simply disabled the ability to recommend a post, but people still do things like put "Rec" or "REC'D" before a post that they reply to.

Yahoo will NEVER tell anybody the truth about this, but if you think about it you'll know I'm right.
