Everytime I reverse my dodge truck it makes an awlful squeaky noise. I was told I needed rear brake pads, but when my dad took it apart-my pads were in excellent shape. Can someone let me know what this could possibly be? Thanks

  1. without looking at it, its hard to tell.

  2. Change the rear brakes and see if you are still hear the same noise.  Brake pads/shoes are made of metal particals and will "glaze" from heating up and can cause squealing noise when backing up.   I am almost postive that changing your brakes will solve your problem.  Personal experience as a brake tech.

  3. To narrow the search; apply the parking brake slowly while backing up to see if the squeaking noise changes when that is done.   Also, if you get the truck up to speed in reverse, apply the brake slowly to see if the noise changes when you apply the pedal.   It still may be the shoes/drum.  Check the shoes to see if they are glossy and use sandpaper on them and ungloss them.

  4. Though the pads were in good shape the lube points may need attention. Take the pads off and where they ride on the bracket, lube with brake grease. Also the back of the pad needs lube where it makes contact with the piston. When your dad has the rear wheels off the ground, rotate the drive shaft and make sure the noise isn't coming from the U-joints.After 25 years of auto repair this seems to take care of this problem.

  5. U joints>Or rear wheel bearings>
