When I send a text message to a Friend and their phone can?

When i was on holiday recently,  i had problems with roaming network and so could not use my phone to make or receive calls, and neither to send or receive text messages.  On my return from holiday my friends informed me that they had texted me while i was away,  and to date,  5 days after my return,  none of their messages has come in.  On enquiry,  i've been told that after a number of days,  any texts not received will automatically be deleted.
