Question:

When I set up a recording on my dual mode DVR, how can I change the TV that it records to?

On my dish network dual mode DVR, my mom records shows and some of them automatically decide to record to my TV (TV2). When I want to watch another show, I can't because that will stop the recording. The show easily could record to the other TV (TV1), but I can't figure out how to make it switch to TV1. I tried switching the "preferred TV" to TV1, but it doesn't change anything. I want to know how to switch recording back and forth between the two TVs that the system is hooked up to either during recoding or before recording. I've done it once before, but I tried it again later and found that I had forgetten how I had done it before.

  1. The Dish Dual DVRs can operate in two modes: Single user and Dual user.  In Single user mode, the output of the DVR is either TV 1 or TV 2 and the user can switch between them with the SWAP button.  In Dual user mode, the DVR acts as two independent receivers with the number 1 remote controlling TV 1 and the number 2 remote controlling TV 2.

If you are in Single user mode, a timer event will automatically be assigned to whatever receiver is free at the moment.  Either remote can be used to do the scheduling.  If an event is recording in TV 1, one can "swap" to TV 2 and surf or visa versa (assuming both channels are not recording).

If you are in Dual user mode, a timer event scheduled with remote number 1 will be scheduled on TV 1 and an event scheduled with remote number 2 will be scheduled on TV 2.  If one wants to surf while recording, he must go to the other set and use the other remote.

So, depending on your configuration, you can set up viewing and schedule things the way you want.
