  1. Since your forehand is your stronger shot generally, this is how I would give the situations.

Forehand:  If the ball is to your right

Ball is hit at you, so back up and turn and hit forehand

Ball is hit to left, slowly, or with spin to your right, then move around it and hit a forehand

Backhand:  Fast shots to your left

Far away shots to your left

  2. If you are right handed then a backhand would be when the ball comes to your left. A forehand is when the ball comes to your right. If the ball comes directly at you and you have no time to move, it is most often best to move your hand to the right so the face of the racquet is directly in front of you and use a backhand in a sense to punch the ball or use the racquet with the face flat in an effort to get it back.

  3. No one can tell what shot you should hit.  It's all about your position when you hit the shot.  I assume you're right-handed so of course hit a backhand when the ball is heading to your left side.  I mean, it's common sense isn't it?  Unless you have to foot speed to run around to try and hit a forehand, I say you have better time to prepare of you hit that with the backhand.  Same goes for the forehand side.  If you're comfortable with your backhand more than your forehand, sure use it...but you do have to time it well and position yourself to hit a backhand.

  4. Generally you hit a backhand when the ball is on your left (unless you can step to the left enough that the ball is on your right).

When the ball is right in front of you, you can choose to hit a forehand or backhand depending on which way you step.
