Question:

When I was a kid, no pizza was ever served at a restaurant without oregano. Why did they stop?

To me, it's always been a staple along with the sauce and cheese. Now I ask for oregano and the servers say, "huh?"

I don't think restaurants stopped it because of the expense - because they still have red peppers and parm cheese on the table. Do you like oregano on pizza?

  1. This is totally shooting from the hip and may be crazy, but what if restaurants don't put it on the table anymore because it looks like marijuana?  Maybe some prankster switched the herb for another kind of herb at one time, and restaurant owners caught wind of it and stopped providing it to protect themselves?

But still, the answer to why they don't bake it into the pizza anymore?  I don't know - maybe they put enough in the sauce...

  2. Because oregano is ole' school, try Parmesan and that will answer your question

  3. I agree -- oregano, basil, parmesan, and red pepper should be available at any place that serves pizza.  I guess restaurants look for ways to cut costs, so they forget the oregano, buy frozen shredded cheese, use pre-made crusts, install fast ovens, etc.

  4. I wonder that too!  I grew up with little green specks on my pizza and the last 10 years or so, I rarely see that anymore.  I always keep it in the house and put it on after I bake pizza or order out.  I get mad when they don't have it in restaurants - they should.

  5. Oregano on pizza sounds tastey!  It adds to the "italian" taste of the pizza.  I agree, more places should have it.  I'm thinking the higher end pizza and pasta places have it.  Too bad I never go there!
