Alright I have a 2000 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 20,000 miles. When I was cruising highway I can feel the transmission slip in and out of high gear even see the RPM fluctuate. This eventually makes the car stall. If left alone for a while (30 minutes) it'll rework for a little while. This problem continuely gets worse however... Does anyone know how to fix or what this problem is?

  1. Go to the Ford house.  It's a problem that Tauruses have always had.  It has been a recall item in years past.  If it wasn't fixed before it might still be a repairable item.  Also, the transmission fluid cooler is too small on that model.  Have them install the corrected model on your car.  In any case, make sure the work is done by Ford.  You might have to request that the mechanics install an oversized cooling unit.  That's what I did with my Taurus.  It works great now, 245,000 miles later.

  2. go to a transmission repair shop and have the fluid and filter changed and if problem still there will have to have your trans rebuilt or replace with a new one..or you could have a sencor going bad also but your check engine light would be on...

  3. Check the transmission fluid, if its O K, Have it scanned , a transmission code will let you know where to start. Good luck

  4. If you mean the engine is stalling, it's not the transmission. It's more likely that the problem that's stalling the engine is the same that's making the transmission act up. Like a vacuum leak. People also often think the transmission is shifting gears when the problem is really the torque converter locking and unlocking.

Engine problems will cause the tranny to go into low gear because the accelerator has to be pushed down further to maintain speed and that makes it downshift or unlock the torque converter.
