  1. Absolutely!

  2. I PATRICIA PHILLIPS AM THERE TO SEE THAT  THE UN DO ITS JOB,

  3. While I think the UN ideal is admirable, it hasn't been very efficient or effective recently because veto powers still remain. Veto is simply the victors of World War II (China, France, Britain, Russia and the US). If one says no, then the entire UN says no. Period! (stupid system).

Presently the Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan by an arbitary line.

  4. I think, only India and Pakistan will be able to solve this, if ever.  India, has already suffered losses with the patitioning of Pakistan and Bangladesh...that is akin to you losing 2 rooms in your house and having people, who are not your family, staying in your house and declaring that the rooms are theirs...you think, India, will want to loose its roof too.....

  5. Will the UN Security Council be able to solve the "problem" (i.e., who owns the region)? No -- it's not really something that body is interested in.

Will the UN General Assembly be able to solve the problem? No -- the assembly is really just a talk forum. It's never solved anything (and I say this a supporter of the UN system)

Will the SG be able to solve the problem? Probably not -- especially the current one. The SG doesn't really negotiate on the huge stuff, like national borders.

Will an individual UN agency be able to solve the problem? Probably not. UNESCO can help promote the cultural treasures region, UNEP can help promote the environmental health of the region, but no UN agency is set up to settle these kinds of disputes.

The only ones that can solve the Kashmir "problem" are Pakistan, India, and the people of Kashmir themselves. Who is best to coordinate their negotiations... not sure. But whomever it is, it needs to be someone willing to devote years to the situation, not just a little time and some talking points.

  6. Don't look to the UN to solve this. It will require internation pressure from large powers like China or US to get this resolved. It is not likely to happen.

Some major change needs to occur to draw attention to this enough to make things happen.

  7. As you rightly say the Kashmir problem will not be solved by the United Nations. It has existed ever since India and Pakistan were created in the nineteen forties. It will not be solved by warfare between India and Pakistan as you seem to suggest.  The only way it might be solved is for Kashmir to be returned to colonial rule by Great Britain as that is where the mistake started. Britain can then fairly divide the nation and grant each sector independence just as was originally done with all other ex British Colonies. Democratic elections can then be held in each sector as to whether they wish to remain independent, become part of India or become part of Pakistan.
