what exactly did he mean?

I think he meant that the worst thing ever is to not be yourself.  If you act like everyone wants you to than you are a fake which he prided himself on.  He was the great person he was because he wasn't a stereotyped rock star.  He did not care who wore what or what music was popular...he did what he wanted.  He was himself!
