When Scottish people move to the US, do they have to work to keep their accent?

Because they always still have their accents even if they moved here a long time ago, and I know a general US accent is easier to use so I'm just wondering if they keep them because they want to keep them or if it just doesn't wear off.

  1. most Scottish people are unaware that they even have a strong accent, i never think i do. but i don't actively maintain it, its just how i speak!

    scotland the brave

  2. A lot of Scottish people don't feel like they have an accent - it's everyone else that does!

I think it depends on the person and who they're around - some of my family who moved to England or America years ago still have their Scottish accents, others lost theirs. But when we're all together they start talking more Glaswegian :)

  3. To you an American accent is easy, to them a Scottish accent is how/where they were brought up from their culture. They cannot change their accent easily, unless they are comfortable with an American accent. In some cases their accent will wear off and change over the years.

    (sorry for bad English)

  4. <<and I know a general US accent is easier to use>>

What a totally insular statement!  It's like saying do Americans have to struggle to keep their accent when they move to Scotland.  I've never heard such rubbish in all my life.

You are trying to say one accent is more superior than another?
