  1. North Chennai(i.e. areas north of puraswalkam, central stn)

are the oldest part of chennai. This area called Georgetown

or Blacktown  was mainly settled by people catering to

British rulers in Fort St, George located nearby.

As the city grew southwards this Georgetown area with

its narrow roads and aging houses could not cope up.

The main reasons are lack of space and huge cost

of acquisition of private lands not to mention huge displacement of people.

But having said that, North Chennai still houses some of the

oldest heritage buildings and the commercial hub esp of

textiles, iron and steel, paper products, plastics and pharma

distributors and grocery shops some of them a hundred years

old make it a lively place.

North Chennai will change eventually as the demographic

profile changes with the advent of IT cos.
