When Trying Out Sushi, What Are Some Safe Things To Try?

My boyfriend and i want to try sushi, but kind of scared. haha. what are some good things that the average person likes. i have had it before, but it was with someone that ate sushi all the time, and knew what was good. Thanks!

  1. Here's a list of sushi that doesn't include raw fish and are easy to eat:

    - Kappa Maki (Cucumber Roll)

    - California Roll (has avocado, cooked imitation crab, cucumber, and carrots)

    - Tamago (Cooked Omelet over Rice)

    - Tako (Cooked Octopus over Rice, if you like octopus)

    - Unagi (Barbeque Cooked Eel, very sweet)

    - Tempura Roll (has tempura, usually drizzled with a sweet sauce)


  2. First timers should always find the best restaurant that serves the best Sushi. You could get advice from any one on what to try but if the place you go to does not do the Sushi right you will experience a bad time.

    Select the right place and you will enjoy what might be the best thing you have ever eaten.

    California rolls to me are not authentic Sushi. Japanese is the way to go!!!

  3. The place I get sushi at has something called Ichiro. It is cooked crab with cucumber or avocado (not sure which), rolled in rice, & then tempura battered & fried. They ad either a spicy sauce or a dark teriyaki type sauce. Not sure if it is just one of their types though. I don't care for the raw sushi, so I stick to California rolls, or Spider sushi (tempura prawn in sushi), or Ichiro. I definitely don't recommend sea urchin, my husband tried it  & looked like baby p**p (yucky!)

  4. try a philladelphia roll its smoked salamon with cream cheese rolled in the rice. Its nothing raw so its a good starter. also a california roll is all vegetables or on with salmon or crab in it is very good too

  5. I used to start my friends on sushi from level 1:

    L1: cooked: egg, cooked prawn, california roll..

    L2: recognisable whole pieces of fish: tuna, yellowtail, eel, sea bream, various maki - whatever that comes in whole pieces

    L3: whole pieces, raw, and not fish flesh: squid, various clams, salmon & other roe (fish eggs)

    L4: sea urchin

  7. first of all, i LOVE sushi.

    you may want to start off with California roll, and spicy tuna roll. I started with spicy tuna roll. the California roll is all veggies, so it's not as bad as regular. if you go to a restaurant, they normally have the description of the sushi on the menu. try something with tempura, that means that the fish is more or less friend, so you know it's cooked.

    all places are different when it comes to what they serve too, so look around. and make sure you go to a place that a lot of poeple go for sushi. make sure it's clean and a good atmosphere, because you want to make sure its actually safe to eat.

    the biggest thing to get past when your eating sushi is the texture. that's why I'd recommend spicy tuna roll, because it doesn't feel like raw fish at all.

The vegetable rolls are a very safe and easy option to start with, as are the rolls with crab (usually imitation crab) in them.  If you'd like to try fish, rolls with tuna, salmon, and hamachi (yellowtail) are all very mild.  If you're a little more adventurous, the unagi (eel) is very good and is cooked, not raw.

  9. most sushi with "american" names are not made with raw fish, so California rolls are safe, made with avacado and cooked crab meat.  They give you some simmilar flavors to authentic sushi rolls though.  

    Many true sushi fans say that any of the Maki-zushi, or rolls arn't true, and yo should try Nigiri-zushi, which is a piece of fish on top of rice, and they do make some of those with cooked fish if you arn't daring there too.
