When Tuning a Cello..?

Which way, when tuning their cello, does one turn the peg? Away from you, or toward you?

I want to be sure to not tighten too much so that it breaks, so I need to know. (Beginner.)

  1. You should be able to tell which way the string is wound by looking at it and figure out which direction will tighten and loosen it.

Otherwise, pluck the string and turn the k**b slightly and you'll be able to tell whether it is tightening or loosening the string by listening to the change in pitch.  You won't break a string if you tighten it slightly.

  2. If the note is sharp (too high) turn away from you.  If it is flat (too low) turn towards you.  Always start from the C string (thickest) and then G, D, A in that order.  Be sure to push the pegs firmly in so they don't slip back out of tune.  If it is way out of tune, tune each string a little at a time in order.

If possible, play the notes on a keyboard and try to match them.  Check using an electric tuner every time you tune until your ear develops (even then it doesn't hurt).

    Use your bow.
